Also, the feature works only if you are changing your mobile number and not the primary smartphone. If you are changing your device as well, you should take WhatsApp backup on your old phone and then install it on your new handset with the old number.
Open WhatsApp on your Android phone/iPhone
Head to Settings and then go to Account
Here, select Change Number. This will open a screen that reads“Changing your phone number will migrate your account info, groups & settings.” Press the ‘Next’ button.
You will now be asked to enter your old and new number. Enter and tap on Next.
Now, you will read a message that essentially confirms your decision to change your WhatsApp number and also asks you whether you wish to notify your contacts about the change.
You can choose three options here- All contacts, Contacts I have chats with and custom
WhatsApp will now ask you to register your new number. Similar to the WhatsApp registration process, you will receive a six-digit code on your new number. Enter it. Once completed, your number on WhatsApp will be changed, while your old chats will remain the way they were.
