Oppo Reno 6 Pro 5G review: A refined upgrade

Top Features

Powerful processor

Lasting battery life

It has been a little over six months since Oppo launched the Reno 5 series smartphones in India and we have a new Reno series duo to take its place.

Carrying the mantle of offering flagship specs at slightly affordable prices, the Reno 6 series — that includes both Reno 6 and Reno 6 Pro 5G — have been launched today. Out of the two, the Reno 6 Pro is more powerful.

Priced at Rs 39,990, it is priced Rs 4,000 higher than its predecessor, Reno 5 Pro which according to us is an overall good buy.

We got to test the all-new Oppo Reno 6 Pro 5G, which offers improvements in terms of processor, battery and software to start a few and here is our review:

The Reno 6 Pro 5G has a design similar to its predecessor — at least for the Aurora colour variant, which was our review unit. It comes with a sparkly and slightly coarse back panel. It would be wrong to say that it has a rough feel, but it is certainly not as smooth as other smartphones, which ensures there are no fingerprint smudges from the usage without a cover.

With the Aurora colour variant, Oppo explains that it has used crystal drilling techniques to create pyramid-shaped crystal structures at a microscopic level, and diamond spectrum body.

This diamond spectrum, according to the company, creates an ever-changing colour effect when viewed at different angles and in different lights. So you get tones of blue, yellow, orange and even green at certain angles. It also claims to have used unique AG glass on Reno 6 Pro that provides 200% more hardness and durability.

The other colour option — Stellar Black — should be slightly more subtle in terms of colour, but you will still get that shimmer effect with it.

The top left corner of the back houses a quad-camera setup in a protruding casing. Same as its predecessor, the camera casing is smooth and houses three big size sensors, one comparatively small sensor and an LED sensor.

The ‘designed for Reno’ branding that was there on the top edge of the Reno 5 Pro 5G is now gone and you get a gleaming Oppo logo on the bottom right corner of the handset.

The volume rockers are placed on the left and the power button is placed on the right edge. The SIM card tray is placed at the bottom edge along with the USB Type-C charging port and a mono speaker grille.

The device weighs about 177 grams, which doesn’t really feel heavy. Also, the slim frame of the handset is quite pleasing. Overall, you get a premium feel with the Reno 6 Pro 5G.

Adding to the premium-ness of the device is its display. The Oppo Reno 6 Pro 5G has a dual-curved design that makes the handset easier to hold and operate. You get slim bezels that are thinner on the sides than at the top and bottom but still quite thin for you to have an overall full display experience.

Specs-wise, the Oppo Reno 6 Pro 5G has quite a few similar specs as compared to the Reno 5 Pro 5G. You get a 6.5-inch AMOLED screen offering 2400×1080p resolution with a 90Hz refresh rate, 92.1% screen-to-body ratio and a maximum touch sampling rate of 180Hz. The overall display experience turned out to be quite enjoyable as the colour reproduction was rich.
Thanks to the custom OS of the Oppo Reno 6 Pro 5G smartphone you get a lot of scope of tweaking the settings. Typical options include dark mode support, theme, font size and style customisations and more.

The Reno 6 Pro 5G also houses an in-display fingerprint sensor, the placement of which is slightly closer to the chin. We relied mostly on face unlock for our needs.

The Reno 6 Pro 5G houses a 64MP main camera, 8MP wide-angle camera, 2MP macro camera and 2MP mono camera.

Just as the Reno 5 Pro 5G, the camera is one of the highly talked about features of the Oppo Reno 6 Pro 5G smartphone.

For those who love the Bokeh Mode shots and videos, this handset offers features like Cinematic Bokeh Flare video effects and Bokeh Flare Portrait. These modes make use of AI to turn background lights into bokeh light spots. We tested this out and found that while you are able to do this, the quality of the video is naturally a bit over-processed.

Then there is an AI Highlight Video feature that is able to record bright and vivid videos with not too much light as well.
Users get interesting video features like Dual-view that allows users to shoot videos by capturing videos from both the front and back camera simultaneously. The mode gives users the choice of three layouts — Split, Round and Rectangle. There is also an Ultra Steady mode that manages to capture steady videos as also claimed by the company covering up the shakiness.

The daytime shots were quite neat as the images turned out to be detailed and rich in colours. The wide-angle camera does the job of capturing the landscape but it is not free from the graininess that most wide-angle camera shots suffer from.

Overall, we can say that the camera of the Oppo Reno 6 Pro 5G is quite well equipped. The pictures taken should be able to satisfy largely most needs of the users.

As far as the hardware specs are concerned, Oppo Reno 5 Pro 5G is powered by MediaTek Dimensity 1200 processor, making it not only 5G-enabled but also being powered by the company's flagship processor. Buyers get a single choice when it comes to storage as the company has launched a 12GB RAM and 256GB internal storage variant. You don’t get support for a microSD card in the handset, which is okay as this should be enough for most users.

Needless to say, that there were no complaints about the day-to-day functioning of the handset. The handset acts on your commands snappily, whether it is opening apps, switching between them, browsing the internet for hours with various apps running in the background.

We also had no complaints in call and audio quality of the device and both are pretty loud. The handset doesn’t include a 3.5mm headphone jack, an increasingly standardised practice for smartphones now but you get a Type-C pair of earphones in the box that should cover your audio needs if you don’t have them or wireless earphones.

The smartphone runs on Android 11-based ColorOS 11.3 making it quite customisable. Users get pre-installed third-party apps like Facebook, LinkedIn and more that can be uninstalled. You get too many system apps — such as O Roaming, O Relax and HeyTap Cloud that cannot be uninstalled so they remain on your device even if you don’t need them.

In terms of features, the ColorOS 11.3 comes with too many little features that you will appreciate if you like custom OS. For gamers, it comes with a dedicated ‘Gamer Mode’ which can block all interference while the user is playing games.

The one common thing that Oppo, OnePlus and Realme handsets have in common is their fast charging support and average battery life and the Oppo Reno 6 Pro is no different.

With this handset, you get 65W SuperVOOC 2.0. This SuperVOOC 2.0 is said to charge the handset from zero to 100% in just 31 minutes and during our test, it managed to juice up 85% in the same time period, which is quite close to the claim.

The device has a 4500mAh battery which managed to last us for more than a day when used moderately and still a full day on heavy-duty days.

Launched at Rs 39,990 for the single storage variant, the Oppo Reno 6 Pro 5G offers a lot of specs and features that are common with its predecessor that is selling at Rs 35,990 currently. So if you are using a Reno 5 Pro model, upgrading to this doesn’t make sense.

For others, however, the Reno 6 Pro 5G offers a powerful processor, a premium-design and lasting battery life. The display and camera experience are also quite satisfactory.

The Oppo Reno 6 Pro 5G is one of the many smartphones that are lined up to to come powered by the MediaTek Dimensity 1200 SoC. In this month only, you will have both the Poco F3 GT and the OnePlus Nord 2 5G come in with the same chipset making things in the affordable flagship segment heat up.
