Samsung Galaxy A51 review: A capable performer
Samsung Galaxy A51: Design
If you are expecting some glass back or fancy metal back then you will be disappointed here as the entire smartphone is made from plastic. But don’t take this in the wrong way as the plastic quality and its finish is really good and at first glance, it’s hard to figure out whether it’s plastic or glass. The back also has a rhythmical pattern which first differentiates the smartphone from the typical dual-tone we see on every other smartphone and also gives it an elegant look and premium feel.
With a maximum thickness of 7.9mm, the smartphone is relatively sleek and curved corners bring added grip while holding the smartphone and during our test, we never felt that the smartphone is slipping from our hand. The back has a quad-camera setup along with an LED flash housed on a rectangular housing just like most smartphones in 2020.
Basics are also right with the smartphone. At the bottom, there’s a Type-C USB port for charging and data transfer, speaker grille, primary microphones and anyone will be happy to see the good old headphone jack on the smartphone in 2020. Another thing we were happy about is the inclusion of the triple slot SIM card tray allowing users to insert two SIM cards along with a microSD card at the same time. It is placed on the left side of the smartphone. The right side of the smartphone has the power and volume buttons.
The design of the smartphone is no surprise as Samsung is known for making good quality products and that’s exactly the case with Galaxy A51.
Samsung Galaxy A51: Display
The display is another aspect of the smartphone where Samsung smartphones shine. The Samsung Galaxy A51 comes with a 6.5-inch FHD+ SuperAMOLED Infinity-O display. The ‘O’ also houses 32MP from the camera sensor.
There are minimal bezels on the display but the chin on the smartphone is still on a thicker side. The Galaxy A51’s brightness levels are sufficiently bright, thanks to the less reflective nature of the glass which helps in reducing the glare and enhances the visibility of the display in bright daylight conditions.
Overall quality of the Super
The display also houses the in-display fingerprint scanner which has definitely improved from the Galaxy A50 and Galaxy A50s. It is fast, but not as fast as the physical one or the ultrasonic sensors from the flagship Galaxy smartphones.
Samsung Galaxy A51: Performance
The Galaxy A51 is powered by Samsung Exynos 9611 processor which is the same processor that powered last year's Galaxy M30. The Exynos 9611 is a capable processor and it is also on a higher state of tune compared to the Exynos 9610 that powered the Galaxy A50.
With 6GB RAM and 128GB storage, the Galaxy A51 has sufficient punch in it to satisfy users’ day-to-day tasks. During our test, app loading speed was quite decent, even for games. Multi-tasking was a breeze and we did not notice any random lag or stutter during the test.
Gaming performance is also good here, and we tried playing Call of Duty Mobile, Asphalt, PUBG Mobile and some lightweight games like Subway Surfer, Candy Crush, etc. We have to admit that the processor did manage to handle the load.
The smartphone runs One UI 2.0 based on Android 10 operating system. One UI 2.0 brings subtle improvements and optimisations over the previous version and we are glad to see that Samsung has decided to bring some flagship features such as Link to Windows, etc to mid-range phones as well.
One UI 2.0 is now more polished than ever and offers good user experience. It comes with well laid out menu options, easy-to-use controls, one-hand mode, game booster, etc.
Also, just like every other A-series phone, it also comes with features like Ultra-data saving,
Talking about features, Samsung has also included some additional software features to enhance the user experience. The first feature in the list is the Smart messages which automatically filters important messages and puts them under the useful card. Also, it automatically identifies the coupons that are expiring soon and places them at the top under Offers section, which also helps in keeping the inbox section clutter-free.
The second useful feature is the smart search. Suppose you want to eat biryani then simply open the launcher and type biryani in it. The search will find all the biryani dishes available near you from the installed apps on your smartphone. We did try the feature and it managed to find the dish almost every time.
Overall, the Galaxy A51 manages to bring a balance between the performance and feature.
Samsung Galaxy A51: Camera
Following the trend, Samsung has also added a multi-camera setup at the back. The Galaxy A51 comes with the quad-camera array at the back that includes a 48MP primary sensor with f/2.0 aperture, 12MP (f/2.2) ultra-wide-angle lens, 5MP depth and 5MP macro lens. At the front, the smartphone gets a 32MP sensor.
Samsung has also made some changes to the camera interface with One UI 2.0 update. But, if you have used any recently launched Samsung smartphone, the camera UI will be familiar to you with the mode selector ribbon placed at the bottom along with the shutter, preview and camera switch buttons and functions such as flash toggle, aspect ratio and more are placed at the top. The app itself is quick to load and offers fast shutter speed as well.
Moving to the image quality, the 48MP sensor on a Samsung smartphone is no surprise. It manages to get reasonably photos with plenty of details and colours in daylight conditions. The buildings in our camera sample have plenty of details and dynamic range is also at par compared to other smartphones.
Samsung has also added a new 12MP ultra-wide-angle lens that now allows capturing .5x photos. The sensor manages to achieve good quality photos as well. There’s no unnecessary softening at the corner of the images and also, the distortion is appropriately managed as well during daylight.
However, things started to change when we took out the lights from the frame. The noise crept in and the images suffered loss of details. Samsung has included the Night mode in the camera, that helps during the low light condition. But, in Night mode photos appeared to be overworked. No doubt, images are much brighter and contain much more detail than the normal mode, but, somehow, we got oversaturated photos which weren’t pleasing at all. We would have appreciated a slightly less aggressive approach here.
Another addition is the macro lens which for some reason does not have autofocus in it. We tried to capture several photos and struggled while keeping the subject in focus. However, we did manage to capture a few images and the 5MP sensor is more than sufficient for a macro shot and the quality is also good despite all the limitations it has.
Overall, the Galaxy A51 is a competent shooter and handles most of the situations with ease.
Samsung Galaxy A51: Battery
Samsung Galaxy A51 comes with a 4000mAh battery with 15W fast charge support which is also the only complaint we have with the smartphones. At this price, we would have loved to see a slightly faster-charging option. However, the battery backup of the smartphone is good and it lasted for almost over a day on mixed usage.
Samsung Galaxy A51: Verdict
The Galaxy A51 improves on certain aspects that were required, such as a better camera, improved display and better battery life. Although, at the price of Rs 23,999, it feels slightly overpriced for the kind of feature and performance it offers. But, with improved performance, display, battery, design and camera, the Galaxy A51 provides a good balance between features, price and performance. It’s more than a competent phone for those who are looking at a mid-range device.
